Rhenofol and Rhepanol – Certified by the Institute Construction and Environment (IBU)

FDT waterproofing systems with Environmental Product Declaration (EPD)

In view of the positive trends in ecological and sustainable building FDT, in addition to the life cycle assessment for its synthetic roofing membrane system Rhepanol®, has now also commissioned an Environmental Product Declaration from the renowned Institute Construction and Environment (Institut Bauen und Umwelt - IBU), located in Königswinter, Germany. It covers both Rhenofol® and Rhepanol® product systems. A major feature of both roofing membrane systems is that they do equally not contain any lead or cadmium or any special additives to prevent root penetration.

The Institute Construction and Environment has now listed all characteristics of both product systems in three EPDs. By scrutinizing the building component including composition, procurement and manufacturing, installation and processing, as well as removal and disposal, the EPDs have been made up according to the most recent standards ISO 14025 and EN 15804
The essentials of any Environmental Product Declaration always comprise a comprehensive life cycle assessment. For the roofing membrane system Rhepanol® it has been available already for many years. According to the results of this life cycle assessment pursuant to ISO EN 14040-49, carried out by the independent institute C.A.U. GmbH, Dreieich, Gesellschaft für Consulting und Analytik im Umweltbereich, (Company for Ecological Consulting and Analytics Ltd.), neither the raw materials, nor the production process or the processing and long-term use do cause any special environmental impact. Even after its useful life, Rhepanol® can be fully recycled.

With the recent ecological certification of the two synthetic roofing membrane systems Rhenofol® and Rhepanol® FDT is now taking into special account the ever growing interest in sustainable building approaches and building certification according to DGNB directives. In particular, for the premium roofing membrane Rhepanol® the EPD is a logical supplement to the life cycle assessment.

The Institute Construction and Environment, Königswinter, Germany, has been established upon the initiative of construction materials manufacturers, in a joint response to the demand for more sustainability in the construction sector. As a manufacturers' association IBU provides integrated external communication of Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) according to ISO and CEN standards. Being awarded an Environmental Product Declaration of the Institute includes independent testing and provides proof of the product quality as well as of the company's responsibility as regards sustainable building.
IBU´s Declaration programme for construction materials has been elaborated in close cooperation with construction and environmental authorities in Germany as well as in the context of international standardisation processes. Successful programmes are also available in other countries like Sweden, France, the Netherlands and Japan. In fact, they are all based on the international ISO 14025 standard covering all industries, the construction sector, however, has been playing a pioneering role. Right now, at the International Organization for Standardization the ISO CD 21930 "Environmental Declarations of Building Products" is being prepared. The IBU is currently the only organisation in Germany that certifies consistently based on international standards.
